i seriously spend all summer long going, “ahhhhhh i live all year for this moment!!” about several different things. there is just nothing like the beauty and warmth and joy and sunshine and happiness of summer!! and blackberry picking at the farm has become SUCH a delightful part of that.
buuuuuuut last year, after we did a whole bunch of picking… these super evil, bad men [aka people sent by the power company] came and sprayed all the bushes near and under the electrical lines, killing off sooooo much. so. i honestly thought that was the end of our blackberries! i mean, it still bothers me, because i am extremely anti-glyphosate, and now we don’t really know what was or wasn’t affected a year ago or how long any toxicity lasts?? plus, it’s just so sad that they would come and just kill all these little gifts that nature gives us!
but the blackberries!!! they came back to us!!!!! my mom texted me a picture of her findings one afternoon last week, and we headed straight over to pick with her. we could. not. resist! i’m never, ever quite so happy to have thorns jabbing my arms, bugs biting away, sweat dripping, and brushes with questionable plant life. [although, there is just no way i’m allergic to poison ivy, let’s just say. all these years of dabbling in who knows what and i’ve never had so much as a rash!]
anyway!! there were still so many unripened berries that needed more time, but we picked what we could! and just what do you do with a basket full of berries? you go home and make a cobbler, of course!! i enlisted the help of my baby beauty queen, who was so excited to do a little baking…
…aaand, voila!!!
but guess what… the kiddos? they looove the picking. and rocco, he is a berry-holic! he ate half the berries he picked. but put the berries in a sweet, cakey substance and… it’s a no go. they hated it!! i couldn’t believe it. haha. i will say, it does bring out the bitterness of the less-ripe berries, and i think that’s the problem.
still, i thought it was DELICIOUS! more for me, right! moooore for me. don’t worry, i took it to the farm and shared. 🙂 time for more berries!!!
[and here is the blackberry cobbler recipe we use!! it’s so easy. and so… so good.]
