a book-themed 1st birthday!

over the weekend, the three of us little peoples went to a birthday party thrown by some sweet friends of ours to celebrate their precious baby boy turning 1!
first birthday parties might be the cutest things ever. ever ever. first of all, i LOVE a good theme. but i also think first birthdays can be tricky. i mean, i personally think there’s a certain point of ridiculousness in the parties that become more about the adults than the baby, you know? [and it also depends so much on the baby’s personality, right?! i would never have thrown a ginormous bash for maddalena. she’s always been more of the carefully reserved type, so we kept hers perfectly personal and she had an absolute blast!]
anyway, this precious party was the very hungry caterpillar themed and so so adorable! i totally admire those who can throw in lots of fun details the way she did, and now i wish i had been sneaky enough to take a few more photos… buuut i was mostly chowing down on yummy appetizers and carrying around a princess. my fav! so, all this to say, i thought this was a great idea…

naturally, i chose the cupcake with the cheese topper, because duh, cheese is the best. even when it’s sugar cheese. [i thought i’d spotted a pizza one! but it turned out to be a watermelon.] also, there were cake balls that formed the hungry caterpillar, too. i am regretting not eating one, slash at least staring really hard at the whole cute and sugary situation.

so, i really love the idea of a book-themed birthday party for babes! if we were to do one now we’d either have to go with pat the bunny, which is our current fav around here…

…now you play peek-a-boo with paul! 😉

What an adorable concept for a birthday party! The cake sounds incredible. I love this idea but I really admire you approach to birthdays. Sweet and simple! I read once that one way to keep kid parties manageable is to invite the # of kid friends that correlate to the age 2 friends at age 2 -three friends at age 3- and so on 🙂

Love this post! We had a hungry caterpillar themed party and pat the bunny is the current fav in my house too. I think I need to get a backup book since it is starting to look a little tattered 🙂
