when maddalena was born, i could not get over her perfect, untouched baby skin. it was so beautiful and new! not even a freckle on that fresh and flawless complexion. i remember feeling like even my own finger was too harsh to rub against her sweet little cheek, although i couldn’t really resist! and i immediately just wanted to do anything i could to keep that fresh skin of hers unharmed forever and always.
something that’s funny is that anyone who knows me knows how much i LOVE the sun. i am a sun worshipper, it’s totally true. i am happiest in the sunshine! and even for my baby shower, sweet friends gave me the cutest baby sunglasses and tiny precious swimsuits for my mini sun goddess, knowing how many pool days there’d be in her future! and, you know, i do want my baby in the sun! i believe in the healthy, immune boosting, happy, healing power of sunshine on bare skin. nooo vitamin D deficiencies allowed here, no ma’am. but that gorgeous porcelain skin of hers? gosh, it’s up to me to protect it! which is scary. totally scary!
maddalena’s first and only sunburn so far happened when i really didn’t expect it. it was a pretty spring day, and i had nooo idea she was somehow getting extra sun exposure on just one of her tiny arms. i still don’t know quite how it happened, but ooooh, it did, and at the end of that day my heart broke over her pink arm, all stingy and sensitive. gosh. i was just absolutely sick over it, and i felt like the worst mom on the whole planet. from then on i have been terrified of that ever happening again. on the other hand, i have had some mixed feelings about sunscreen. i want to take care of my skin and especially my baby’s skin, but i also feel quite wary of slathering on a ton of chemicals and then letting the hot sun just bake them into our skin, you know? that seems just as cancer-causing at plain ole sun. from the beginning, i’ve been incredibly picky about what goes on and in my child. i definitely haven’t wanted to make an exception for sunscreen, but it can be so tough with babies! many natural products really don’t rub in very well, and maddalena is not a fan of the application process, let. me. just. tell. you.
however!! while we were off on our sea island blacation, we were introduced to something fabulous! a slew of products from supergoop! had arrived for us to try out, woo! [i mean, that pretty little display was legit!] and one of them was a spray-on, broad spectrum, oxybenzone-free, fragrance-free, paraban-free SPF 50 sunscreen! [there’s spf 30, too!] GLORY. aaand the mamas were sold! we all felt totally at ease using this on our babies’ bodies, the little ones didn’t mind the application of the mist, and it stayed on the whole time we were out splashing in the sun! i was impressed, to say the least. also, i think my personal favorite supergoop! product has got to be the mintfusion lip balm with SPF 30, which i have been wearing religiously, as it keeps my lips unscathed and glossy! just how i like ’em!! especially because not long ago, i threw all my old chemical-laden lipglosses out for good, and it’s been a little harder to find healthy options that i really love. and i love lip gloss. so that’s kind of a big deal.
the best part of this story is that morgan has known the creator of supergoop!, holly, for some time and even remembers helping her package up some of their very first orders! i think that’s pretty neato. anyway. thank you so much for sharing with us, supergoop! consider me a loyal customer from here on out! no more pink arms for us around here. although, now we just call it her “tan arm” as it’s stayed a shade darker than the rest of her body all summer. ha! oh, bless her heart.

Such a cute photo of her! I usually don't apply sunblock for my boy although we're out (i know, that's really bad). I need to get some sunblock soon!
